I just spent hours deleting all the black-friday, cyber-monday, buy-shit-you-don’t-need emails that clogged up my inbox over the weekend. The worst thing is that every other subject line said HURRY! DON’T MISS! LAST CHANCE! It was stressful just trying to get through them. Those of you that know me, know how suggestible I am. I’ve been known to purchase ‘As Seen on TV’ items… As Seen on TV! That’s the worst of the worst. I can’t help myself.

As I slogged through my emails trying with every ounce of strength to avoid falling prey to the sales pitches, I started to think about a mixtape I used to have. Intermixed with some 90s tracks was a sample of a comedian’s monologue. Sometimes you just hear something on a mix that stays with you forever. I couldn’t find the tape so I went to work on the internet and my detective work proved fruitful. I found him! Bill Hicks. A comedian from the South who died from cancer in the early 90s when he was 32 years old. He smoked cigarettes on stage and talked about drugs, religion, satan, stupidity in society and bullshit in politics. His humor was dark and scary at times, brutal even, but funny as hell.

In keeping with my general focus to report on all things music I have made an important discovery that I would like to share with the world wide world. And that discovery is that pigments are way better than regular make up. Ok ok ok, I know pigments have been around for centuries and there are festivals in India revolving around the wonders of pigments, but has anybody every realized what a benefit it is to wear pigments for a night of serious rocking? Well, I’m here to tell you that you don’t have have to scare yourself in the mirror ever again.

Dear readers, because I love you so much, I decided to go out into the field and put this theory to the test personally. So I put a bunch of colored pigments on my eyes, went to a show, got down in the pit and came out like new. Well almost like new, I was dripping from head to toe, but my makeup was not! Don’t believe me? Ladies and gentleman I am happy to share this “after” photo with you.

The New Parish, Oakland CA

While I’m on the subject of Lightning Bolt, I might as well talk about the recent show they played at The New Parish in Oakland. I had hoped that they would play on the floor, but they played on the stage which is only a few feet high, so it still kinda felt like they were in the crowd. The height of the stage was unfortunate for the guys up front though because they were getting their balls crushed by the surge of the crowd. Some of them looked like they were in alot of pain, maybe they were just feeling the music. I don’t know.

To see Brian Chippendale on the drums is like watching a jazz drummer play the sickest solo, except that the solo is endless and untiring. Really, where does he get all that energy from? It is effing amazing. I wonder if he is able to do everything with that amount of energy, like grocery shopping or making coffee or having sex… it really does make you wonder. His microphone/mask thing failed at the end, but he kept playing anyways. I felt strangely self-conscious watching him play sans mask because it seemed for a second that I should never know his face, but he is so bad ass it didn’t matter, so I got over it. Brian Gibson’s bass was tight. I love how he can make it sound like a distorted guitar and pull syncopated rhythms out from the strings at the same time.

The sound scape that the two of them sculpt is complex on many levels yet simple on the most basic one: Lightning Bolt will destroy you… and you will like it.

I was going through some of my photos and found these from The Treasure Island Music Festival 4, 2010. Die Antwoord kicked so much ass. They stole the show and blasted the headliners out of the water with Bass. Deadmau5, LCD, Kruder and Dorfmesiter, Miike Snow… they were all good, but Die Antwoord was EEEEEEVIL WICKED!!!! It was like, the Bay was rumbling so hard, even the sea creatures had to come up for air.

I was in New York last week for work, but really had only one thing in mind: how I was going to get into the sold out Major Lazer/Santigold show at Terminal 5. Well, it ended up that I didn’t have to worry about it because Diplo spun for the after party at my HOTEL. Um yeah, it was AWESOME. Skerrit Bwoy was there too, but I didn’t see him daggering, maybe he was off booty duty. It was fun, everybody was drunk as hell and he still killed it. Can nothing stop this man? I think he falls into the “Tiger Blood” category because, damn, his shit is ILL!!!
